Tuesday 19th May 2026

Good morning from Japan! Currently out in a place called Hakone to the west of Tokyo, and it’s the last hot and sunny day of the trip…as we are about to swap weather. You’ll all be getting the hot sunshine in the UK by the end of the week, I’ll be getting back to rain here in Japan.

Wi-fi is a bit rubbish so there will likely be less detail than normal, and given that I’m on holiday I haven’t been looking at anywhere near as many model runs so don’t have as much information as usual so there may be less accuracy than I normally hope for.

Thanks to Katharine for the photograph.

So the general picture sees low pressure still in control, but the Azores high is about to build from the south-west.

Tuesday starts cloudy with outbreaks of rain. This will be followed from around late morning by some brighter spells but still plenty of cloud and a fair few showers. Quite windy and around 17’C. Fairly cloudy overnight, the odd shower still around – down to around 12’C.

Still a fair amount of cloud around on Wednesday but more in the way of bright/sunny spells. A few showers around but hit and miss, and reaching around 19’C. Still quite windy. Clear skies at first overnight, more cloud later and perhaps a shower towards dawn. Around 11’C.

Thursday starts cloudy, the odd shower possible. Gradually it will become sunnier as the day goes on, and warmer too, around 21’C or so. Mostly clear skies overnight, roughly around 12’C.

Friday will be glorious with long spells of sunshine. Quite hot, reaching around 26’C or so. Mostly clear skies overnight, down to around 13’C.

For Saturday we have high pressure in control with the air sourced from the south. It’ll be pretty scorchio for late May.

However there will be some cloud around on Saturday thanks to a weak weather front, and a little bit of uncertainty over whether it could trigger a heavy, thundery shower at some point – say around a 20% chance. But otherwise hazy sunshine and on the hot side, roughly around 27’C – but could be a bit more.

Sunday should be back to good spells of sunshine, a bit of cloud probably floating around at times, and temperatures roughly around 27’C. I cannot totally rule out a shower, but unlikely.

Very similar for bank holiday Monday, though probably a tad hotter, say 28’C to 30’C.

Probably this continues into the next week too. And whilst I’m out of the country…alas.

Not sure when the next forecast will be, onto Kyoto next. Enjoy the glorious sunshine when it arrives!
