Hot and often sunny – but you might catch a shower or two at some point.

Thanks to Phillipa for the photograph, albeit from a couple of months ago.

So the general picture sees high pressure and at least pretty hot conditions moving up from the south, with low pressure to our north-west gradually heading further away from us – but not without some slight influences.

Thursday starts cloudy. Gradually from around mid/late morning this will break up into sunny spells. There is a chance of importing a thundery shower in the afternoon/evening, say around a 20% chance, but otherwise the afternoon will be a case of increasingly sunny skies. Very warm, around 25’C. Clear spells for much of the night – though a chance of some low cloud, perhaps even mist/fog developing by dawn. Down to around 14’C.

Any cloud/mist will break up quickly on Friday morning to leave good sunny spells – probably a bit of cloud around at times but lots of sunshine. Hot, somewhere between 27’C and 29’C most likely, but perhaps a tad more. Humid too. A very small chance of an evening shower, otherwise mostly clear spells for much of the night – but clouding over towards dawn. A fairly warm night, no lower than around 17’C.

Saturday starts on the cloudy side as a very weak weather front crosses – we might even squeeze a bit of light rain out of it. The cloud will gradually break up in the afternoon, sunshine amounts will increase and it will become hot once more. Around 25’C to 28’C most likely, depending on how quickly the cloud breaks up. Quite humid too. Fairly clear skies overnight and fairly warm, down to around 16’C.

By Sunday the low pressure is further away and allows high pressure to develop closer to the UK – and probably much hotter air to push up from the south.

There is quite a bit of uncertainty for Sunday – much more than normal for 3 days away.

More likely there should be long spells of sunshine – a bit of cloud at times, and a very small chance of a shower. Temperatures likely in the hot category but quite a wide range possible – more likely range is 28’C to 32’C but it could be a couple either side of that. And though long spells of sunshine is the more likely outcome, there is a small chance of something cloudier. A warm night should be expected.

It doesn’t get less uncertain for Monday. Most likely there are long spells of sunshine, though some cloud probable and a small chance of a thundery downpour. However, there is a high range of possible temperatures depending on the exact positioning of the high pressure and the resultant air flow. As such, maximum temperatures could be anywhere between 26’C and 36’C – with the more likely outcome in the middle somewhere. The very hot end of the scale is less likely but it’s still very plausible, say a 20% chance.

So if we get the very hot conditions on Monday, that would probably be the peak of it – either way we should settle into next week being mostly sunny and hot, with temperatures more likely in the range of 28’C to 30’C, give or take, and fairly warm nights.

More likely it remains hot and sunny into next weekend, possibly it could be very hot – the small chance of breaking the June temperature record is there. Though normal levels of hot, say 28’C to 30’C will be more likely.

I hope you all bought air conditioning!

That will do for now – I’ll try and update before Sunday if I get time with regards to peak temperatures for this Sunday/Monday – though do keep up to date with Met Office forecasts if you have concerns about the possible heat.
